More over-65ers in Belgium continue to work

Sep 14, 2015
In 2014 in Belgium, 46,200 people over the age of 65 had a job, 49% more than five years ago (31,000), write Het Laatste Nieuws and De Morgen, based on figures from the FPS Economy.

Belgians of retirement age remain active for various reasons, including maintaining a certain standard of living. "The generation that should now be retiring witnessed the consumerism boom of the 1950s and '60s," says labour market specialist Jan Denys of Randstad. "They continue working in order to keep enjoying the good life."

The figures from the FPS Economy also show that half of the over-65ers who work
perform highly skilled jobs, and in most cases part-time. Full-time work at this age is rare, except among the self-employed.

Belgium still lags behind the Netherlands, where more than 200,000 people of retirement age still work, according to figures from ING.
