Milk producers hold protest in Libramont
Belgian milk producers are gathered today in Libramont to mark the opening of the 81st agricultural fair and to draw attention to the dairy industry's current crisis, announced the Walloon Milk producer Interest Group (MIG), initiator of the action.
It is not yet known what the producers will do during the protest, which kicks off around 9.30 in front of the entrance to the agricultural fair. The fair's organisers have no problem with the event, as long as all parties remain civil and peaceful.
Erwin Schöpges of MIG expects about 100 people to participate in the action, mostly young farmers. They have the support of the Union Groupements Fédération d'Eleveurs et d'Agriculteurs (Fugea).
As milk prices continue to plummet in Belgium, producers face hard times, with some calling it a crisis of enormous proportions, similar the EU dairy market crisis of 2009.
